This painting was inspired by the Franz Zaver Winterhalter painting of the same name. The subject is a scene from a medieval Spanish legend in which the Visigoth King Roderick falls in love with the young noblewoman, Florinda. The landscape in the background was based on the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country.
