I used chalk pastels to render the sunrise breaking through the morning clouds over Dawn Beach, Sint Marteen. After a week of sketching the fast moving clouds every morning, I knew I wouldn't be able to capture this moment without a photograph, so I took the shot and worked on the piece after I returned home. The way the sun was breaking through the clouds feels so hopeful to me and I hope I captured that joy and serenity within this piece.
