Stepping int the Light- Stonington, ME
This large oil was begun en plein air at a vantage over this charming village on the coast of Maine. I've been painting here for many years during trips to Maine. The composition came into place nicely during the outdoor session and then was tightened up in the studio. The light on the bay and on the houses was the main appeal. I added the figure later but she was considered from the beginning and became the theme. Her position in the lower left conveniently is in a dynamic point. The perspective of the houses was also key to the composition, so I took care to get the orthogonal all leading to the vanishing point. Two of the house further down were on different perspective grid, which added interest.
