Sleighing the Art World! (Eric Rhoads in a Santa Hat)
Title: Eric Rhoads in a Santa Hat

Medium: Oil on lead-primed linen (Artefex ACM)

Description: This 8x10" portrait of Eric Rhoads, publisher and mentor, was inspired by his festive challenge on Art School Live. I drew upon my training with Nelson Shanks at the Art Students League of New York to capture Eric's likeness in a classic, timeless manner. The entire portrait was painted with Rublev Lead White #2, a walnut oil-based paint, which imbues the piece with a unique, subtle warmth. The cobalt violet accents and blues retain their vibrant, purplish and bluish hues, respectively, due to the walnut oil binder.

The process began with a grisaille underpainting, establishing the foundation for the subsequent layers of color. I sought to convey Eric's jovial spirit and kind heart, as evident in his bright, knowing gaze. The Santa hat adds a playful touch, symbolizing the joy and camaraderie of the Art School Live community. As an artist who has grown and learned significantly through Eric's mentorship and Art School Live, I am delighted to submit this portrait as a tribute to his inspiration and guidance.
