Fishing by Moonlight

One summer evening travelling to Deer Lake, Newfoundland, Canada, I was mesmerized by the view from the airport shuttle bus: moonlight coming through the moving clouds and hitting the crests of the waves and lone fisherman. After a process of photo editing and preliminary sketches, I used layers of expressive pastel mark making to portray the moving clouds and the moon peaking through them. I conveyed the shimmering water using an underpainting of acrylic silver paint, as well as metallic pastel sticks for the highlights, on charcoal Ming paper.
